Code C0161 indicates a problem with the ABS/TCS brake switch circuit. The brake switch, located at the top of the brake pedal, tells the Electronic Brake Control Module when you press the brake pedal. The EBCM needs this information to coordinate ABS activation, traction control, and stability control properly. This is the same switch that activates your brake lights.

Because this switch serves multiple systems, a failure can cause several noticeable issues beyond just the ABS light. Your brake lights may not illuminate when you press the pedal (a serious safety issue for other drivers), cruise control may stop working, and on vehicles with electronic shift lock, you may have difficulty shifting out of Park without pressing the override button.

The good news is that this is often one of the more affordable ABS repairs. The brake light switch itself is typically a $10–$40 part and is located under the dashboard near the top of the brake pedal, making it accessible for a DIY replacement. Start by inspecting the switch — it may simply need adjustment. If the switch and wiring test good, the EBCM input circuit may be at fault, which is a more expensive repair.

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on dashboard
  • Traction control light illuminated
  • Brake lights may not work properly
  • Cruise control may stop functioning
  • Difficulty shifting out of Park
  • StabiliTrak or stability system warning message

Likely Causes

Faulty brake light switch40%

The brake light switch on the brake pedal assembly is the most common cause. It sends the brake pedal position signal to the EBCM, and when it fails or becomes misadjusted, the EBCM cannot properly coordinate ABS and traction control.

Damaged wiring or connector at brake switch25%

The wiring harness to the brake switch runs through the firewall area and is subject to rubbing, heat damage, and connector corrosion over time.

Misadjusted brake switch20%

The brake switch has a specific engagement point relative to brake pedal travel. If the switch is out of adjustment, it may send incorrect on/off signals to the EBCM.

EBCM input circuit failure15%

The input circuit in the EBCM that reads the brake switch signal can fail, making the module unable to detect brake pedal application.
