The P0463 code indicates that the PCM is receiving a higher-than-expected voltage signal from the fuel level sensor. This typically causes the fuel gauge to read full all the time, even when the tank is nearly empty. This is the opposite of P0462, which causes the gauge to read empty. Of the two, P0463 can be more dangerous because you might unexpectedly run out of fuel.

The most common cause is an open circuit — a broken wire, disconnected connector, or failed sending unit that prevents the signal from reaching the PCM. When the circuit is open, the signal voltage floats to its maximum, which the gauge interprets as a full tank. Check the connector at the top of the fuel tank first, as it's the most accessible point and a common failure location.

Until this is repaired, do not rely on your fuel gauge. Track your fuel usage by recording miles driven since your last fill-up, and refuel based on your vehicle's known fuel economy. Running out of gas can leave you stranded and may damage your fuel pump. If the wiring and connectors check out, the sending unit inside the tank will need to be replaced.

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge always reads full even after significant driving
  • Distance-to-empty display shows unrealistically high range
  • May unexpectedly run out of fuel despite gauge showing fuel remaining
  • Check Engine light is on
  • Low fuel light never comes on

Likely Causes

Open circuit in the fuel level sensor wiring35%

A broken wire or disconnected connector in the fuel level sensor circuit causes the signal to float high, making the gauge read full.

Faulty fuel level sending unit30%

The sending unit's internal resistor can fail open, producing maximum resistance and a high-voltage signal that makes the gauge always read full.

Corroded or disconnected connector at fuel tank20%

A connector that has corroded through or come unplugged at the fuel tank creates an open circuit, resulting in a high signal.

Poor ground connection for the fuel level circuit10%

A missing or corroded ground connection prevents the circuit from completing properly, causing the signal to read high.

PCM or instrument cluster fault5%

Rarely, the PCM or gauge cluster may misinterpret the signal due to an internal malfunction.
