P0741 means the Powertrain Control Module has detected that the torque converter clutch is not engaging properly — it's stuck off or its performance is outside the expected range. When the PCM commands the TCC to lock up (typically at highway speeds), it expects the engine RPM and transmission input shaft RPM to match. If the converter fails to lock or slips significantly, this code is set.

The primary effect you'll notice is reduced fuel economy, because without torque converter lockup, the engine has to work harder at highway speeds. You may also notice slightly higher RPMs than normal during cruising, and possibly a subtle shudder. While this code won't leave you stranded, the reduced efficiency and potential for further transmission damage make it important to address.

A transmission fluid service resolves this issue in a surprising number of cases, especially if the fluid is dark or has not been changed on schedule. If fresh fluid doesn't help, the TCC solenoid is the next most likely cause and is a much less expensive repair than replacing the torque converter. Have a transmission specialist diagnose the specific cause before authorizing expensive repairs.

Symptoms

  • Noticeable drop in fuel economy
  • Engine RPMs stay higher than expected at highway speeds
  • Check Engine light illuminated
  • Slight engine shudder or vibration during highway cruising
  • Transmission may feel less responsive at steady speeds

Likely Causes

Faulty TCC solenoid (stuck off)35%

The TCC solenoid may be stuck in the off position, preventing the torque converter from locking up. This is the most common cause and means the converter never achieves direct drive.

Contaminated or low transmission fluid25%

Dirty, degraded, or low ATF can prevent the TCC solenoid from functioning properly, keeping the converter clutch from engaging.

Internal torque converter failure20%

Worn or damaged clutch material inside the torque converter can prevent lockup even when the solenoid is commanding it, causing a performance deviation.

Wiring or connector damage12%

An open circuit, high resistance, or corroded connector in the TCC solenoid circuit can prevent the solenoid from receiving proper voltage to engage.

Valve body issue8%

A sticking or worn valve in the valve body can restrict hydraulic flow to the torque converter clutch apply circuit.
