The P0758 code is an electrical fault code for shift solenoid B, meaning the Transmission Control Module has detected an electrical problem in the solenoid's circuit. Unlike P0756 (performance) or P0757 (stuck), this code specifically points to a wiring, connector, or solenoid coil issue rather than a hydraulic or mechanical problem. The circuit may be open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power.

This code typically puts the vehicle into limp mode immediately, limiting you to a single gear (usually third). While the vehicle can still be driven short distances at reduced speed, you should address this promptly. An electrical fault means the TCM has lost the ability to control the 2-3 shift entirely, and prolonged driving in limp mode can cause transmission overheating.

Diagnosis should start with a visual inspection of the wiring harness leading to the transmission and the multi-pin connector on the transmission case. Look for damaged insulation, corroded pins, or loose connections. A multimeter can be used to check the solenoid's resistance — most shift solenoids should read between 12 and 25 ohms. If the wiring and connections are good but the solenoid reads out of specification, the solenoid itself needs replacement.

Symptoms

  • Transmission shifts erratically or not at all
  • Vehicle enters limp mode (stuck in one gear)
  • Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Delayed or absent 2-3 shift
  • Decreased fuel economy

Likely Causes

Damaged wiring or connector in solenoid circuit35%

Open, shorted, or corroded wiring between the TCM and shift solenoid B is the most common electrical fault, especially in higher-mileage vehicles.

Failed shift solenoid B (internal short or open)30%

The solenoid coil itself may have an internal open or short circuit, causing it to fail electrically even though it appears physically intact.

Corroded transmission connector20%

The multi-pin connector on the transmission case is exposed to road debris and moisture, and corrosion on these pins can disrupt the solenoid circuit.

Faulty Transmission Control Module15%

The driver circuit inside the TCM that powers solenoid B may have failed, though this is usually accompanied by multiple solenoid electrical codes.
