The P2413 code means the PCM has determined that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is not performing as expected. The EGR system recirculates a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake to lower combustion temperatures and reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. When the PCM commands a certain amount of EGR flow and the actual response does not match, this code is set.

This code can cause noticeable drivability issues. A malfunctioning EGR system can cause rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, and engine knocking or pinging — especially under load like climbing a hill. Fuel economy may also decrease. While you can still drive, these symptoms should be addressed within a week to prevent potential engine damage from detonation (knocking).

The most common cause is simply carbon buildup, which is a normal byproduct of the EGR system's operation. In many cases, removing and cleaning the EGR valve and its passages with carburetor cleaner or a wire brush will resolve the issue — a relatively easy and inexpensive DIY repair. If cleaning does not help, the EGR valve may need replacement. Before replacing, check that vacuum lines (if equipped) are intact and the EGR position sensor is reading correctly.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Engine knocking or pinging under load
  • Possible increase in exhaust emissions

Likely Causes

Carbon-clogged EGR valve40%

Carbon buildup from exhaust gases has restricted or blocked the EGR valve, preventing it from opening or closing to the target position.

Faulty EGR valve25%

The EGR valve's internal motor, pintle, or diaphragm has worn out or failed mechanically, so it cannot achieve the flow rate the PCM requests.

Clogged EGR passages or tubes20%

The exhaust passages that route gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake are blocked with carbon deposits, restricting flow regardless of valve position.

Faulty EGR position sensor or pressure feedback sensor10%

The sensor that reports EGR valve position or exhaust backpressure to the PCM is giving inaccurate readings, making the PCM think performance is out of range.

Vacuum supply issue or faulty EGR solenoid5%

On vacuum-operated EGR systems, a cracked vacuum line or failed solenoid prevents the valve from actuating properly.
