The P2100 code indicates that the PCM has detected an open circuit in the throttle actuator control motor — the electric motor inside the electronic throttle body that physically opens and closes the throttle plate. In modern drive-by-wire vehicles, there is no physical cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle; instead, the PCM commands the throttle motor based on accelerator pedal input.
This is a serious code because it means the PCM has lost the ability to control engine throttle. When this happens, the vehicle will typically enter limp mode (also called 'limp home mode'), severely restricting engine speed and power output. In some cases, the engine may stall or refuse to start entirely. The vehicle may also shut off non-essential systems like air conditioning to conserve power.
Do not continue normal driving with this code. While limp mode is designed to allow you to safely reach a repair facility, the unpredictable throttle behavior makes the vehicle unsafe for regular traffic. Have the vehicle towed or carefully driven to a mechanic. The most common fix is replacing the electronic throttle body, though sometimes the issue is simply a corroded connector or damaged wire that can be repaired.

Symptoms
- •Check engine light on
- •Vehicle enters limp mode with severely limited speed
- •Little to no throttle response when pressing the gas pedal
- •Engine may stall or fail to start
- •Air conditioning and other auxiliary systems may shut off
Likely Causes
The throttle body contains the motor that opens and closes the throttle plate. Internal motor failure, worn brushes, or burned-out coils create an open circuit, preventing the PCM from controlling throttle position.
The wiring harness between the PCM and the throttle body can develop breaks, corrosion, or loose connections due to engine heat and vibration, creating an open circuit in the throttle control motor path.
While the APP sensor doesn't directly control the motor circuit, a failed APP assembly can cause the PCM to disable the throttle actuator as a safety measure, effectively creating the same symptoms.
The internal driver circuit in the PCM that supplies power and control signals to the throttle motor can fail, preventing the PCM from commanding the throttle body even though the throttle body itself is functional.
