The P2101 code means the PCM has detected that the electronic throttle body motor is not performing within its expected operating range. Unlike P2100 (which indicates a complete open circuit), P2101 indicates the throttle motor is receiving commands but isn't achieving the correct position — it's too slow, too far off target, or behaving erratically.

A very common cause is simply carbon buildup on the throttle plate and bore. Over thousands of miles, oil vapors from the PCV system coat the throttle body interior, creating friction that prevents smooth throttle operation. Cleaning the throttle body with appropriate throttle body cleaner is an inexpensive first step that resolves many P2101 cases. After cleaning, a throttle body relearn procedure is typically required.

This code is classified as urgent because the PCM may put the vehicle into limp mode, severely limiting your ability to accelerate. If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, the throttle body assembly (which includes the motor and sensors as a unit) may need replacement. This is a moderately priced repair — expect $150–$400 for the part and $100–$300 for professional installation, plus the relearn procedure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Vehicle enters limp mode with reduced power
  • Erratic or delayed throttle response
  • Engine surging or stalling
  • Unstable or fluctuating idle speed

Likely Causes

Carbon buildup on throttle body plate30%

Carbon deposits on the throttle plate and bore create friction that prevents the throttle motor from achieving the exact position the PCM commands, causing the actual position to deviate from the expected range.

Failing electronic throttle body motor30%

Worn internal motor components — burned coils, worn brushes, or damaged gears — cause the throttle motor to operate sluggishly or erratically, falling outside the PCM's expected performance parameters.

Faulty throttle position sensor (TPS)25%

The throttle position sensors inside the throttle body can develop erratic resistance or dead spots that report incorrect positions to the PCM. Even if the motor is working fine, bad TPS readings trigger a range/performance code.

Wiring issues causing intermittent connection15%

Unlike P2100's complete open circuit, P2101 can be caused by intermittent wiring faults — loose connectors, chafed wires, or corroded pins that cause momentary signal loss or voltage drops during operation.
